All of these commissioned works were made to fill a client's particular need - a storage space, a work/rest area, or perhaps some combination of the two. The process of making custom furniture depends on good communication, problem solving, and a great deal of flexibility, and I have found that small differences in design can have surprising practical implications in the long term. For this reason I try to spend a bit longer working with clients on the planning stage before I begin construction on a project - sometimes meeting face to face several times to refine an idea; this way there is room to play a bit with the materials, the shape, the parameters, room to create a dialogue that could lead to unexpected solutions.
