In 2005, at the request of a client, I designed, platform bed, from live-edge walnut. Out of this first commission came several subsequent projects, such as entry table and low screen, which explored the relationship between a wood slab and its outside edge. In some of these projects, the naturally occurring edge was maintained or enhanced through carving; in others like for ulrich, designed to accompany dining chairs by Guglielmo Ulrich, a back-bevel was created around the circumference of the tabletop to add a sense of lightness and delicacy to the thick, book-matched panels. In this body of work I was less interested in celebrating nature per se than balancing a piece of wood's often exotic qualities with a careful, disciplined minimalism.
